Did you know Pekingese is often misspelt as Pikinese?

Pekingese Health

The main health problems that are associated with Pekingese dogs involve the eyes and breathing.

One of the most striking features of the Pekingese are its large, round, dark eyes that almost pop out of its skull. Eye ulcers can be a common problem and care must be taken to ensure your Peke doesn't come into contact with sharp objects that could damage its eyes.

Because of its small skull and flattened face, breathing can be a problem - just as it is with other breeds like bulldogs for example. It means that they will pant more readily to keep cool (that's how dogs reguilate their temperature).

Always make sure your Pekingese is cool and comfortable - never leave them outside on hot (or very cold) days and never leave them unattended in a car even if you don't think it is particularly hot.

You need to look out for skin allergies and hotspots too, especially in the folds on your Peke's face.

Pekingese can also suffer from back injuries, especially if handled incorrectly. When picking a Pekingese up, make sure you support its chest and stomach using both hands when doing so.
